At first glance, the difference between a <\/i>daycare center<\/i><\/b> and a <\/i>preschool<\/i><\/b> isn\u2019t all that clear.<\/i> Many people even use the terms interchangeably in everyday life, as if they were the same thing. In this article, we\u2019ll explain in a casual and easy-to-understand way what \u201cKita\u201d<\/b> and \u201cKindergarten\u201d<\/b> each mean, what the differences<\/b> are, and what you as a parent should keep in mind. <\/p>\n

What does “Kita” mean?<\/h2>\n

“Kita”<\/b> is short for ” Kindertagesst\u00e4tte<\/b> “\u2014an umbrella term for various forms of child care. A Kita can include a nursery<\/b> for babies and toddlers, a preschool<\/b> for children ages three and up, or even an after-school program<\/b> for school-age children. Often, multiple types of care are combined under one roof, such as a nursery and<\/b> a preschool in a single facility. <\/p>\n

Typically, a daycare center offers full-day care<\/b>, which means it\u2019s open from early morning until late afternoon. This is particularly beneficial for families in which both parents work or for single parents who need reliable full-day care. Of course, depending on the facility, your child can also attend daycare part-time\u2014these days, not only traditional preschools but also many daycare centers offer part-time or half-day spots<\/b>. <\/p>\n

(Note: A daycare center can therefore serve all age groups\u2014from infants to school-age children\u2014depending on which programs (infant care, preschool, after-school care) are offered.)<\/i><\/p>\n

What is a kindergarten?<\/h2>\n

A preschool<\/b> is an early childhood education and care facility<\/b> for children from about age 3 until they start school<\/b>. There, children are cared for by early childhood educators, who support their development and prepare them for school through play<\/b>. At kindergarten, your child will learn, for example, to play with others, follow rules, be creative, and independently complete simple tasks\u2014all the things that are important during the preschool years. <\/p>\n

Traditionally, preschools have often been open only half the day<\/b>, usually in the morning. In the past, many children attended preschool only until noon and then had lunch at home. For parents who work only in the morning or who prefer to care for their child themselves in the afternoon, this model was ideal. Nowadays<\/b>, however, many kindergartens have adapted to the needs of working parents and also offer extended hours or even full-day spots that last into the afternoon.
