The Berlin Model

At daycare, you’ll come across many new terms. One of the most frequently mentioned terms, especially in connection with the daycare adjustment period, is the Berlin Model. The adjustment process at our Stadtküken daycares in Hamburg is also based on this model. That’s why we’d like to briefly and simply explain what it’s all about.

The Berlin Model is a proven approach that helps children transition into daycare in a particularly gentle way. It is based on the idea that the close bond between you and your child is the foundation for building trust even in a new environment. To ensure this process is successful, you actively support your child during the first few days. Step by step, you then take a step back while allowing the relationship with the childcare professional to grow. The adjustment process according to the Berlin Model consists of three phases: the initial phase, the stabilization phase, and the final phase. The Berlin Model is used both for settling into daycare (children ages 0–3) and for settling into preschool (children ages 3 and up). At Stadtküken, we also follow a three-phase approach based on the Berlin Model. We call these phases “Arrival,” “Being There,” and “Participation.”

This way, the daycare center becomes a place where your child feels safe, secure, and welcome—a solid foundation for a successful start to their new daily routine at daycare.

With Heart & Time — At Your Own Pace

Arrival

During the first phase, your child will be given the chance to gently settle into the new environment. As their primary caregiver, you’ll be right by their side, providing a sense of security, while the childcare professional initially observes from a distance, radiating positivity and calm. This gives your child the time and space to explore the new environment at their own pace. Step by step, the daycare experience becomes more familiar, and a solid foundation for bonding and trust is laid.

Be there

Now the new experiences are slowly becoming exciting and interesting—your child is actively venturing out on little explorations. You stay nearby, but no longer right by their side; instead, you become a safe haven from which they’re free to set out on their own. In the process, your child experiences a sense of self-efficacy, tries new things, and is free to decide what they’d like to try and what they’d rather skip. The early childhood educator offers small prompts that playfully guide the child without pressuring them.

During this phase, your child begins to feel like part of the group and to connect with others. They experience that their questions and ideas are met with answers and that they have an impact on how the group interacts. As a primary caregiver, you can now gently step back, since your child has already established a secure bond with their new caregiver. Through mindful guidance and loving repetition, familiarity grows, and your child is able to experience genuine community.

HOW TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD UPON ARRIVAL

5 Tips for Settling In

1. Give your child time

Every child is unique—and the adjustment period is just as individual for each child. Some feel comfortable after just a few days, while others need a little more reassurance to gradually open up. Both are perfectly fine. When you give your child time, you’re sending the message: “You can grow at your own pace.”

2. Stay reliable

In this new situation, your child is looking above all for guidance. A consistent caregiver who remains present during the adjustment period provides stability and a sense of security. Your reliability reassures your child that they are not alone—and that is exactly what makes the transition to daily life at daycare easier.

3. Be present, but stay in the background

At first, your presence is crucial—your child senses that you’re there, which allows them to explore their surroundings without fear. Over time, you can gently step back and give your child the space to take the initiative on their own. This way, they’ll experience small moments of success that help build their confidence in their own abilities.

4. Say goodbye mindfully

Short, clear, and loving goodbyes are an important ritual. They show your child that you’re leaving, but that you’ll definitely be back. Sneaking away can cause uncertainty and fear—a clear goodbye, on the other hand, builds trust and makes the separation easier.

5. Trust your child

Children are naturally curious and love to explore. When you trust your child to take this new path, they sense your confidence—and find the courage to give it a try. With your confidence behind them, they can flourish with confidence, make friends, and discover daycare as a new and exciting part of their world.

A Cause Close to Our Hearts

The adjustment period is a very special step—for your child and for you as parents. We know that this transition can bring up many feelings: anticipation, curiosity, but sometimes also uncertainty or worry. All of these feelings are normal and have their place.

It’s important to us that you know: Every child has their own pace when it comes to building trust and feeling comfortable. Some children eagerly dive into new experiences, while others need more time, closeness, and security. Both approaches are perfectly fine—because the adjustment period is as unique as each child is.

We guide this process with care, love, and a wealth of experience. In doing so, we create an environment where your child feels safe and can build new relationships step by step. Our goal is not speed, but rather a strong foundation for trust, joy, and curiosity.

Trust your child—he or she has everything needed for this new phase of life. Together, we’ll give him or her the space and time needed to grow into the new world of preschool with courage and a sparkle in his or her eyes.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to adjust?

There is no set timeframe for the adjustment period; it always depends on the needs of each individual child. We recommend allowing plenty of time, as your child will set the pace for their adjustment on their own terms. Three to four weeks is often a realistic timeframe—sometimes it goes faster, sometimes a little one needs a bit longer—every child is allowed to take as much time as they need.
