GROW & BLOSSOM

Nature as our most valuable place of learning.

With the “Stadtküken” program, children discover nature as an open learning environment where they can move freely, experiment, and understand how things are connected. These direct experiences with nature spark curiosity, build trust, and foster a close connection to the environment.

KLIMAfuchs

Through the KLIMAfuchs project, S.O.F. Save Our Future—the Hamburg Environmental Foundation—helps local daycare centers incorporate climate protection into their daily routines. Through KLIMAfuchs, children discover how valuable it is to treat our environment with care. Through play, they learn to conserve resources and make sustainable decisions—and in the process, they develop a sense of responsibility, awareness, and joy in working together to shape their world. Topics such as heat, electricity, waste, and mobility guide us through small and large projects throughout the year.

We'll show you how we experience nature

At our Stadtküken daycare centers, we create spaces where children can discover nature with all their senses and develop freely. What does that look like? See for yourself!

Learning with Ease

For us, nature is far more than just a place to play—it is a living space for exploration that gives children freedom, physical activity, and sensory experiences that no indoor space can replace. As they run through the grass, collect chestnuts, or feel the rain, they discover not only their surroundings but also themselves. Earth, water, wood, and stones become materials for imagination and play—towers are built, little adventures are embarked upon, and the songs of birds or the bustle of insects invite wonder. These experiences strengthen body awareness, motor skills, and self-confidence, while also fostering mindfulness toward nature and one another.

Frequently asked questions

What does nature education mean at Stadtküken?

For the “Stadtküken,” nature education means that nature itself becomes a place of learning for the children. We use our small green oases in the heart of the city as learning spaces where children can explore the connections between nature and all their senses . Here, they’re free to explore, observe, experiment, and learn to their heart’s content—while having lots of fun and moving at their own pace. Another central component of our daily nature-based education is our annual plan, which covers monthly nature and sustainability topics such as water, electricity, food, heat, and waste. These topics are taught in a child-friendly way that relates to everyday life—for example, by exploring with magnifying glasses, crafting with natural materials, cooking together with regional ingredients, or building with recycled materials. In this way, children discover how valuable our environment is—and learn through play to appreciate and protect it.
